Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the Forest, Xan, is kind. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon. Xan rescues the children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.
One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. As Luna’s thirteenth birthday approaches, her magic begins to emerge--with dangerous consequences. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Deadly birds with uncertain intentions flock nearby. A volcano, quiet for centuries, rumbles just beneath the earth’s surface. And the woman with the Tiger’s heart is on the prowl . . .

The Girl Who Drank the Moon is about a girl named Luna. Every year the people of a town called Protectorate leave a baby in the woods because the Elders of the town say an evil witch lives in the woods and will destroy Protectorate if they do not do that. There really is a witch in the woods, but she is not evil. Every year the witch, whose name is Xan, uses magic to feed the baby starlight. Then, she takes the baby to other cities and towns. The babies are called Star Children. But one year, Xan feeds the baby moonlight. The moonlight makes the baby magic. Xan decides to raise the baby and name her Luna. Xan worries that Luna will hurt herself or others with her magic, so she casts a spell that will remove Luna's magic until her 13th birthday. On Luna's 13th birthday, Xan will die. I recommend this book if you love awsome fantasy stories
I at first was kinda scared of this book, but once I read more, I could not stop. I just absolutely love this book! 😊💙
I love this book!
When a librarian recommended this book I was confused because of the title. now that I read it, it's safe to say this book was amazing. So many stones unturned, so many stones turned-well actually only one- so many great-no AWSOME characters. My friend (who knows I read WAY to much) wanted me to try this book and I told her I've already read it. I really recommend this book it was amazing.
Well, the author took hundreds of pages to get to the point, but the story was great. But if the author hadn't taken so long to get to the point, it would have been five stars. My favorite character is a tie between Anton and Fyrian. Also, the story is barely about Luna (the girl who drank the moon) anyway!
When I first started reading this book it had just a ,lot of details, as I read more and more it got more magical. It was engrossing!! I enjoyed reading how the author had described the setting, feelings and characters. Me and my dog would ait in a comfy spot on the couch reading this for hours! I hope you love this book as much as I do!!
This book was a birthday present to me I love to read. This book is impossible to put down.An extreme page turner Kelly Barnhill is a amazing author
